Abstract
The Old City wall is one of the most important cultural heritage assets of Jerusalem. It is without doubt the most prominent monument in the city’s urban landscape, greatly influencing the development of the modern city. In 2005, several stones of the Old City wall were detached and fell into the schoolyard of the Collטge des Frטres. Consequently, the Israel Antiquities Authority Conservation Department undertook a survey to collect data concerning the physical condition of the wall. The survey results pointed to a variety of physical problems along the entire length of the City Wall. Following this, in 2006, the Prime Minister’s Office initiated a project to conserve and rehabilitate Jerusalem’s City Wall. The project was directed by the Jerusalem Development Company, and the Israel Antiquities Authority Conservation Department was entrusted with its planning and implementation. Work began in the field in January 2007 and continued until 2012. The wall reflects the city’s colorful history. Working on the different wall sections, we set out to guarantee a balance between the original architectural values of the monument and its urban and national values.
