Abstract

In the excavations conducted to the east of Tel Yavne, remains from several periods were uncovered, including, for the first time, Chalcolithic-period remains. Based on the trial sections and excavations, it is possible to estimate the size of the Chalcolithic site at 18 dunams. The archaeological layers dating to this period were reached at a depth of 2–3 m below the surface, in the trough between the kurkar ridges, next to the ancient riverbed of Naḥal Soreq; the course of this stream was identified in the excavation. So far, three small sections belonging to the Chalcolithic settlement were unearthed (Areas A, J and R2), in which two occupation phases of agricultural-rural character were observed. Despite differences between the size of the areas and the quantity of items they yielded, the three areas share the same technological and typological characteristics, and it is clear that they all belong to the Ghasulian culture.
