Abstract

In January–August 2022, a salvage excavation was conducted in the city of Rahat, exposing remains dating from the Late Roman, Byzantine, Early Islamic and late Ottoman periods. The excavation results shed light on the first years of Islamic rule in the south of the country. The excavations at Rahat (South) aroused great curiosity among the local residents of Rahat and its vicinity, mainly following the discovery of a mansion dating from about 1200 years ago, the first of its kind in the Negev to date to the Early Islamic period, and a local mosque, one of the oldest in the world. As a result, the site was opened to the public and visited by hundreds of people from the city of Rahat and its surroundings. The “Antiquities of Rahat” project is an educational project initiated by the Israel Antiquities Authority, the Municipality of Rahat and the Rahat Community Center for the residents of Rahat. It aims at exposing the school students of the city to their local cultural heritage and environment. The in situ learning model applied at Rahat offers the students a sense of belonging to their place of residence and brings the students closer to their environment. This is accomplished through activities that offer an exciting journey into the bowels of the earth and a discovery of the secrets of the local past heritage and culture.
