Abstract
Over a period of approximately 1000 years, from the Hellenistic to the Early Islamic period, the northern Negev underwent many changes. During the Byzantine period, the population of the northern Negev reached its peak in terms of number of inhabitants and settlements. By the mid-fifth century CE, the majority of the local population was Christian; however, at no point in time was only one religion practiced in this region, as classical and other forms of paganism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and different combinations thereof, were practiced simultaneously. This paper considers the change in the religion of the local population, focusing on Late Antiquity, which experienced the rise and fall of Christianity.
