Abstract

Over the past few years, several archaeological excavations were carried out in the el-Hara el-Sharqiya (today, Ramat Eshkol) neighborhood, as well as in Khan el-Hilu and its vicinity, which comprised the nucleus of the Old City of Lod. This paper presents the main findings from Khan el-Hilu, the vicinity of the tomb of Sheikh Muhammad el-Jisr and the Sheikh Nabi Shimon quarter (today’s marketplace), ending with the findings from Khan neighborhood and the local Hamam el-Wakf to its south. The study of the architectural remains, and the small finds retrieved from the various buildings and houses, serves as fertile ground for understanding various aspects of the Lodian House in the late Ottoman period (eighteenth–nineteenth centuries CE). The findings allowed for a comprehensive evaluation of aspects, such as architecture, construction methods, household, nutrition, economy, culture and leisure.
