Abstract
This paper summarizes the historical and archaeological sources pertaining to Lod, offering a reconstruction of the ancient landscape and events that took place in the city during a long period of over a millennium, from the Persian period to the Muslim conquest. It is stressed that in many cases the archaeological evidence is scarce. The Lod Generation of Jewish rabbinic sages marks the glory days of the city that served as the center of Jewish life in the period between the Great Revolt and the Bar-Kokhba Revolt (70–135 CE). During that time, many sages lived and worked in the city and in its vicinity; various rabbinic discussions echo their scholarly, religious and spiritual world. Many references to the rabbinic literature are included, shedding light on everyday life, as well as to the shape and form of the city. Other Byzantine-period Christian and Jewish sources relating to the history of Lod are mentioned and discussed as well.
