Abstract

In the Late Roman period, Lod was inhabited by a small Christian community that became a majority in the fifth–sixth centuries CE. In the early Byzantine period, the city’s bishop, Aetius, attended the Nicaea council (325 CE), an act that symbolized the importance of Lod in the Christian Holy Land. According to Theodosius the Pilgrim, Lod was associated with the cult of St. George from 530 CE, and the saint was mentioned in the journey of Anthony, describing the Church of St. George and the miracles he had performed. During the Persian invasion of 614 CE, rumors spread out that a treasure was hidden under the Church of St. George, which may have been the reason for its destruction. St. George is the main church in Lod, located in its center. The city of Lod, Lydda, appears in the Madaba mosaic map. Today, segments of the church walls are incorporated in the modern mosque.
