Abstract

In 1951, an excavation was conducted in the area of Kibbutz Yif’at and Kibbutz Gvat (map ref. 2200/7310), following the discovery of a mosaic floor during the digging of trenches in the 1948 War of Independence. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by Y. Shapira. Part of a mosaic floor, built of tiny stones precisely cut, was discovered. The mosaic is part of a frame, decorated with geometric patterns in red, black and white. The floor was damaged and part of it was taken. The ruins of a structure built of large stones were also discovered at the site. West of the mosaic floor and at a lower level then it, another complete mosaic floor (c. 2 × 3 m) was exposed, which was not excavated; This floor was built of larger white stones, without decoration. It was damaged by the Kibbutz tractor.
