Abstract

In August 1966, a trial excavation was conducted in Akhziv, north of the Akhziv bridge (map ref 2100/7730). The excavation was conducted following the discovery of a group of cist graves during expansion work on the western margins of Nahariya–Achziv–Rosh Hanikra road. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by Y. Ben Yosef. The graves were devoid of any datable finds. Skeletons were found in eight of them, oriented east–west (the skull was placed in the eastern part of the grave). The excavator attributed the graves to the Persian period. The graves were covered without excavating. In a day–long excavation, two cist graves built of unworked stones were discovered, oriented east–west. In one of the graves a skeleton of a woman was found, lying on her side, with colored glass bracelets on her arms and a blue bead necklace. In lieu of datable finds, the excavator attributed the graves to the Late Islamic period based on the jewelry.
