Description
The town of Korazim is of special interest to Christendom, and thus was frequently mentioned by scholars and travelers to the Holy Land. The identification of Korazim with Khirbat Karazeh is now almost universally accepted. The site was extensively surveyed and excavated in 1962–1964, under the direction of Ze’ev Yeivin on behalf of the Department of Antiquities. Based on these excavations, the layout of the town and the setting of the synagogue within it could be elucidated. In 1980–1987, excavations at the site were resumed, during which some 30 probes were carried out in the synagogue and its vicinity.
The English section of the book provides a detailed description of the synagogue, its construction stages, architecture and décor; the coins from the excavation are described, a short summary of the pottery (from the Hebrew section) is given, and a summary of the finds from the excavation, the date of the synagogue and the conclusions is presented.
